چکیده

Kachanov’s simplifiedmodel ofmicrocrack interaction is applied to an investigationof the behaviour of a cracked body under predominantly compressive periodic loading, so that the cracks experience periods of closure and slip, with frictional dissipation. The model is shown to be equivalent to a discrete elastic frictional systemwith each crack representing one node. Theorems and algorithms from such systems are applied to determine the conditions under which the system shakes down to a state with no slip and hence no energy dissipation in friction. For conditions not too far beyond the shakedown state, the dissipation is significantly affected by the initial conditions, but with larger oscillating loads, it becomes a unique and increasing function of load amplitude. The effect of crack interaction is assessed by comparisonwith an uncoupledmodel, forwhich the dissipation is obtained as a summation of closed form expressions over the crack population. For small numbers of cracks, the results are significantly dependent on the randomly chosen crack locations and sizes, butwith larger populations, a statistically significant decrease in dissipation is observed with increasing interaction terms. & 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Strength of Granular Materials in Transient and Steady State Rapid Shear

This paper discusses relationships between the frictional strength of a flowing granular material and quantities including porosity and grain-scale energy dissipation. The goal of the paper is to foster an understanding of frictional strength that will facilitate the development of constitutive laws incorporating important physical processes. This is accomplished in several steps. First, a fric...

Crack Deflection and Propagation in Layered Silicon Nitride/Boron Nitride Ceramics

Crack deflection and the subsequent growth of delamination cracks can be a potent source of energy dissipation during the fracture of layered ceramics. In this study, multilayered ceramics that consist of silicon nitride (Si3N4) layers separated by boron nitride/silicon nitride (BN/Si3N4) interphases have been manufactured and tested. Flexural tests reveal that the crack path is dependent on th...

Analysis of Work-of-fracture Method for Measuring Fracture Energy of Concrete

The role that plastic-frictional energy dissipation in the fracture process zone plays in the workof-fracture method for measuring the fracture energy of concrete or other quasibrittle materials is analyzed, and a possible improvement of this method is proposed. It is shown that by measuring the unloading compliance at a sufficient number of states on the post-peak descending load-deflection cu...

Frictional systems under periodic loads — History-dependence, non-uniqueness and energy dissipation

Nominally static contacts such as bolted or shrink-fit joints typically experience regions of microslip when subjected to oscillatory loading. This results in energy dissipation, reflected as apparent hysteretic damping of the system, and also may cause the initiation of fretting fatigue cracks. Early theoretical studies of the Hertzian contact problem by Cattaneo and Mindlin were confirmed exp...

On Averaging Interface Response During Dynamic Rupture and Energy Partitioning Diagrams for Earthquakes

Earthquakes occur as dynamic shear cracks and convert part of the elastic strain energy into radiated and dissipated energy. Local evolution of shear strength that governs this process, which is variable in space and time, can be studied from laboratory experiments and rupture models. At the same time, increasingly accurate measurements of radiated energy and other quantities characterize earth...
